Footnotes

Launched in 1962, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III and its Bentley S3 equivalent employed their predecessors' 6.2-litre V8 engine - though with larger carburettors, new distributor and raised compression ratio - and came with a four-speed GM-derived automatic transmission as standard equipment. Most obvious among many changes from the preceding models was the adoption of four-headlamp lighting; the absence of sidelights from the wing tops; and a slightly lower radiator shell. Inside there was improved accommodation with separate front seats and increased room for rear passengers. The long-wheelbase versions of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and Bentley S Series continued after the introduction of the new V8 engine, offering a less expensive alternative to the newly introduced Phantom V limousine. Four inches (101mm) longer in the wheelbase than the standard saloon, these even more exclusive models usually were fitted out with an internal division. Between 1962 and October 1965 when the last car was delivered, 206 Silver Cloud II LWB saloons were built with the factory's standard bodywork, plus a further 47 with special coachwork.

Accompanying copy chassis cards show that this luxurious Silver Cloud III long-wheelbase saloon with division was retailed via Rolls-Royce Inc, New York and traded by J S Inskip, New York to its first owner, Mrs Mary-Miller Lambert of St Louis, Missouri. The original colour scheme was Masons Black with beige interior, and the car left the Crewe factory equipped with electric windows, radio, Firestone white-wall tyres, and plain Sundym glass throughout. The Silver Cloud was delivered to Liverpool on 24th October 1962 and two days later was shipped aboard the Sylvania to New York. For US registration purposes the car was classed as a 1963 model. The chassis card records the original engine number as CL5A, the car is currently fitted with an engine numbered '3 APC' with the stamping partially obscured.

Kept in dry storage since its acquisition by the current vendor, the car will require recommissioning before returning to the road. It is hoped that further information will be available at time of sale.

Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III LWB Berline 1962
Châssis n° LCAL9
Moteur n° CL5A (voir texte)
