James Dugdale (British 1940-2017), 'Paris-Madrid 1903',
The organisation of the Paris to Madrid race of 1903 met with some opposition from the French authorities and the press, who felt that the cars were now too fast to race on the open roads. Sadly, this proved to be the case on 24 May 1903, with high speeds, clouds of dust obscuring the route, fragile cars, and lax marshalling of spectators leading to an inevitably tragic conclusion to the era of road-racing. The race was stopped at Bordeaux after 341 miles of the planned distance were run due to fatal accidents. The race victory, although incomplete, was awarded to Gabriel who arrived in Bordeaux with a time of 5 Hours 14 Minutes and 31.2 seconds.
