1970 Porsche 911S 2.2-Litre Coupé Chassis no. 9110301064 Engine no. 6301396
"Quite understandably, journalists got excited about the revised 911s. For many reasons, the 2.2-litre cars would be among the best Porsches ever made. Performance was more than adequate, all the 'bugs' had been eradicated and genuine improvements had been made. Even the 'baby' 911T was capable of 128mph (206km/h), dashing from rest to 60mph in under 9 seconds" – Lawrence Meredith, Porsche 911 Model by Model.
Porsche's perennially popular 911 sports car first appeared at the 1963 Frankfurt Show as the '901', but shortly after production proper commenced in 1964 had become the '911' following Peugeot's complaints about the use of '0' model numbers. The preceding Type 356's rear-engined layout was retained but the 911 switched to unitary construction for the chassis/body and dropped the 356's VW-based suspension in favour of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement.
In its first incarnation, Porsche's single-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled flat-six engine displaced 1,991cc and produced 130bhp; progressively enlarged and developed, it would eventually grow to more than 3.0 litres and, in turbo-charged form, put out well over 300 horsepower. The first of countless upgrades arrived in 1966, two years after production had commenced, with the introduction of the 911S. Easily distinguishable by its stylish Fuchs five-spoked alloy wheels, the 'S' featured a heavily revised engine producing 160bhp. In 1969 the entire 911 range was updated with a 2.2-litre engine, by which time the 911's wheelbase had been extended by 57mm to tame the sometimes wayward handling. As installed in the top-of-the-range 911S, the new 2.2-litre engine produced 180bhp.
Sold new in Italy, this Porsche 911S is finished in Bahia Red with black interior and left the factory with the following options installed: spoilers, air conditioning, electric windows, and headrests left and right (see Porsche Italia letter dated 2005 on file). However, it is not certain whether all of these items are still present. Completely restored between 2005 and 2006, the 911 is still in overall good condition and recently completed the Winter Marathon event. Restoration photographs are on file and the car also comes with Italian registration papers and a FIVA passport issued on 7th January 2019.
