This Ducati, originally an 851 Tricolore Strada, was purchased in early 1990 by Elio Fait, who competed with it as a privateer in the Italian Battle Of The Twins championship in the 1990s. The machine was prepared and developed over the years by Learco Ghelfi of Team Ghelfi, who also worked for Giancarlo Falappa, Raymond Roche and Doug Polen. The vendor advises famous mechanic Pietro Gianesin of GPM Racing worked on the bike as well. Although presented in racing specification, the Ducati is still road registered and retains its libretto and license plate.
In 1998 the original owner sold the Ducati to a friend (an amateur track day enthusiast) who kept the machine and maintained it until late last year when it was purchased by the current vendor following a full rebuild. In its current form The Ducati weighs just under 160kg wet (so around 150kg dry) and the engine delivers 135 horsepower at the rear wheel, making it very close to a 1990s specification Superbike model.
The engine is a 926cc unit fitted with 'G' cylinder heads; twin injectors (four in total); and a full Termignoni 'Spaghetti' racing exhaust system. Ducati's original 851cc desmoquattro engine would undergo several capacity increases over the years, these enlarged engines appearing first in the factory race bikes and then in the production roadsters (the 926cc engine was first seen in the works bikes in 1993). Liveried as an '888' model, this machine also features full carbon fibre bodywork (including the fuel tank, front stay and airbox); Marchesini magnesium alloy wheels; Öhlins rear shock absorber; fully floating Brembo Racing brake discs; aluminium rear frame; magnesium clutch housing; aluminium radiator; quick break fuel line connectors; WP steering damper, modified Showa forks, etc. A major service was carried out in September 2021 (liquids, belts, filters and valve clearances), which is when the machine last ran. Accompanying documentation consists of the current libretto; the 1990 libretto (recording Fait's and the next owner's names); and an email from Ducati confirming that the machine was built as an 851 Tricolore Strada in May 1988.
