• Well known successful lightweight racer
• Raced by Greig and Jack Horne
• Restored in 2003
• Well documented

The Horne-Rudge was a successful lightweight racer that featured regularly on the UK motorcycle racing scene from 1947 up until the late '50s. It was extensively developed and ridden by talented engineers Greig Horne, (pre-war Manx Grand Prix and post-war TT rider) and his son, Jack. The bike has a fascinating history which is well documented in the extensive file that accompanies the lot. This contains numerous period photographs and letters from previous owners, tuners and admirers of the bike detailing its road and race history. It featured in various motorcycle magazines of the 1950's and in later articles of the Rudge Enthusiasts Club Journal. A number of programmes from the TT and other races in which the bike competed are also included. The Horne-Rudge first appeared on the race scene in the 1947 Lightweight TT, followed by a host of results achieved including:

• 15th in the 1953 Lightweight TT (by Jack Horne)
• 10th in the 1954 Lightweight TT
• 5th in the 1954 Ulster Grand Prix, (World Championship round)

There were also regular podiums and wins for the bike at the Kircaldy, Crimmond, Errol and Charterhall circuits in Scotland during the 1954 to 57 period in the hands first of Jack Horne then from 1954 by T.E Rutherford. It also claimed the Scottish Championship.

The Horne-Rudge was first registered for the road on 30th April 1954 and the history file documents various changes of ownership following the machine's retirement from 'front-line' racing duties in the late '50s. Later owner, John Rutherford managed to buy back the original 250cc engine which he restored and is now on display at the Lakeland Motor Museum. Following an article on the Horne-Rudge in the Rudge Enthusiasts Club journal a member, Norman Leach, realised he knew where the machine was and mentioned it to his brother Les, who purchased the rolling chassis and completed its restoration back to its former glory in 2003. Les Leach was the current vendor's late father.

Other documentation includes the original RF.60 buff log-book and previous MOT certificates, the last dated 2013. The bike's original registration number was re-issued by DVLA in 2002 (a letter confirming the transfer is included – the number understood to be non-transferable). The machine has a current V5 and the original fuel tank is included.

The engine currently fitted (A557) was built by Les using the original engine which was loaned to him to replicate. Technical drawings relating to the engine build are also included in the extensive history file. Sold strictly as viewed, this is an opportunity to own a real piece of British road racing history.
