In the 1970s and 1980s, Japan's motorcycle frame design lagged behind that of its engines, meaning that anyone wishing to exploit a motor's full potential had little option but to opt for a bespoke chassis. A number of specialist firms sprang up to satisfy this demand, at the very pinnacle of which was – and still is – the Italian firm of Bimota.
Boasting Bimota's characteristic twin-spar aluminium beam frame, and powered by a mildly tuned version of Yamaha's FZR600 engine, the ultra-rare YB9 Bellaria offered here is one of only 145 made. The YB9 is notable as the first Bimota to be assigned a name: that of a beach near the Bimota factory at Rimini. Also worthy of note is the digital dashboard, a common enough feature now but unheard of 30-plus years ago. Unlike previous Bimota models, the Bellaria was designed as a two-seater, with more of a sports-touring demeanour than that of an out-and-out sports bike. It still had a top speed of 150mph though... The current vendor purchased the Bellaria in September 2000 (bill of sale on file), since then it has been well maintained and used sparingly. Run earlier this year, the machine is offered with a V5C registration document (UK registered since 1994) and a thick file of history.
