• Rare, late KTT racer
• Iconic overhead cam design
• Ideal for parades, sprinting, and racing

The advent of the KTT Mk VIII for 1939 ushered in a new era for Velocette and their racing successes. With the benefit of the Maestro, Stanley Woods, riding Velocettes, the factory began a string of wins with him, and other riders, which lasted until the outbreak of war. Some of the biggest names in racing were associated with the Mark VIII, both pre- and post-war, including Frith, Bills, Foster, and Archer to name but a few. It is a testament to the model that it continued to win races after the war, and remained in production until 1951, still providing wins to the end of its run. Small wonder that the model is held in such high esteem.

Inspired by the racing exploits of the giants of pre- and post-war eras, the owner of this Mark VIII had always harboured a desire to own one of these iconic and fascinating racing machines, so when Paul Ingham, a well-known figure in vintage motorcycle circles, was able to offer this machine for sale, he jumped at the chance. At the time of acquisition, approximately 7 years ago, the Velo was fitted with an incorrect KSS bottom end, but luckily, came with a spare KTT bottom end. A talented engineer, the owner stripped and rebuilt the correct-type bottom end, replacing anything that was required, and with the right top end fitted, he soon had the machine back to standard trim.

On completion, around 6 years ago, the KTT was started and run, to check everything was working correctly. As befits a racer of this period, it is running on a racing castor oil, carburation is via an Amal RN carburettor, and ignition from a BTH magneto. It is thought that the engine number is not a factory stamping. Included with the KTT is a box of spares, some of which are new.

Intending to use the machine for parades and displays, the vendor has reluctantly concluded that he may not have the confidence he once would have had in charge of such a bike, and decided that he should pass it on to someone who can give the racer the use and attention it deserves. He has indicated that he thinks the magneto may need some attention, and suggested that a new owner should give the machine a recommissioning, as it has, thus far, only had static running, and not been used on road or track. However, it should be noted that, on consignment, the engine turned freely, and all gears selected. A fantastic opportunity for a new owner to acquire one of these truly legendary machines.
