THE PORSCHE 911S

The first of countless up-grades to Porsche's perennial 911 came in 1966 with the introduction of the 911S. Easily distinguishable by its stylish Fuchs five-spoked alloy wheels, the 'S' featured a heavily revised engine producing 160bhp. A lengthened wheelbase introduced in 1969 improved the 911's handling, and then in 1970 the air-cooled, 'flat six' engine underwent the first of many enlargements: to 2.2 liters. In 1974 all 911 variants received the 2.7-liter unit, hitherto reserved for the Carrera, when the latter went to 3.0 liters. Although in non-Carrera tune the 175bhp (DIN) 2.7-liter unit made slightly less power than the old '2.4', it had been skillfully reworked to produce significantly more torque over a much wider rev range while offering noticeably improved acceleration. Coupled to tolerance of low-lead petrol, vastly superior fuel consumption and increased tank capacity, the new 911 proved superior to its predecessor in every way as a fast, long-distance tourer. By 1977, when this J-program car was made, maximum power output of all non-Carrera models had been standardized at 165bhp regardless of the destination market (including California).

THE CAR OFFERED

This 2.7-liter Porsche 911S Coupe was sold new to Mr Kerry Bahl on May 21, 1977 through Carlson Porsche of Palo Alto, California, and has the exhaust re-circulation anti-smog device fitted to Californian models of this period. Remarkably, the car remained with this same owner until 2013, by which time its odometer displayed just 3,700 miles. According to the seller, the car was used sparingly for trips to the local golf club over Mr Bahl's 40+ year ownership. The file contains the original registration cards in Mr Bahl's name for every year from 1977 to 2009, and is offered with the original service books. Porsche Club California stickers show 25 years and 35 years respectively. The car even comes with its original date-marked tires.

In 2014, at 3,700 miles, the Porsche was imported into Europe by a well-known European dealer, as evidenced by the accompanying purchase invoice from Mr Bahl (Certificat d'Acquisition on file). Sold to a collector in the South of France, the car was imported into the UK in January 2018 and via one of the leading UK Porsche experts, JZM Porsche, in August of 2018 and subsequently re-commissioned. JZM also carried out a comprehensive paint thickness survey, in which they determined that all paint was original and no panels had been resprayed.

There are bills on file for JZM's servicing in 2018 totaling over £5,000 and additional £3,260 in 2020 and £1,025 in 2021. The sales invoice and subsequent service work states from JZM's that the car is a "Totally Original, Un-restored Survivor Example". Interested parties should note, that other than the registration validation cards and statements from JZM, there are no mileage records on file. The odometer reading is now 4,300 miles, the condition substantiates the mileage and the car must be seen to be appreciated. Presented in exceptional condition, this highly original Porsche 911S must be one of the most untouched of its type still in existence.
