THE DE TOMASO PANTERA

Having established himself as a serious automobile manufacturer with the Mangusta coupé, Allesandro De Tomaso commissioned Lamborghini designer Gianpaolo Dallara to produce the chassis for his new mid-engined supercar, the Pantera. The Ford Motor Company was De Tomaso's partner at the time of its conception and thus the Pantera, like the Mangusta, relied on Ford V8 power. The 351ci (5.8-liter) engine varied in output depending on the destination market and in European trim came with 330bhp, or 350bhp as installed in the Pantera GTS. With either option the Pantera could sprint to 60mph (97km/h) in a little over six seconds and touch 160mph (257km/h) flat out. For the last models produced in 1991, the 351ci was replaced with a 302ci Ford engine with electronic fuel injection.

The updated Pantera's of the 1990's received a redesign of practically every component including engine, transmission, braking, chassis and suspension. Most Panteras were sold with automatic transmission, though the GTS was available with a ZF five-speed manual gearbox. The first generation Pantera's were styled by Tom Tjaarda at Carrozzeria Ghia, the stunning coupé body was, in fact, built by Vignale, both companies being part of the De Tomaso's empire in the early 1970s. For the last iteration of the famed Pantera, De Tomaso enlisted the help of Marcello Gandini, famed designer of the Miura and the Countach, to design their final Pantera. The design was timeless, penned by a legend in the automotive world, the 90 Si is surely going to be remembered for its over the top styling, a great way for the final send-off of the legend that was known as the Pantera.

THE CAR OFFERED

Presented here is a very low mileage, highly original example of the DeTomaso's final enduring creation, the Pantera 90 Si. Built in June of 1991 in De Tomaso's Modena factory, this Pantera was the culmination of a completely redesigned and modernized final Pantera. The chassis, suspension, brakes, engine and body were completely redesigned to give the car a more appropriate 1990s look. The vehicle was delivered new with a plethora of new features including revised chassis, new suspension geometry, Brembo ventilated brakes, alloy wheels by Fondmetal now shod with Michelin tires, a fuel-injected Ford 302 powerplant and a ZF 5-speed transaxle equipped with a limited slip differential. Although on paper, De Tomaso claimed 247 horsepower from this setup, the engine had been massaged with different internals as well as other reworked parts, which reportedly brings the output to a more realistic 305 horsepower.

The standard equipment included on all the 90 Si's was leather upholstery, wood trimmed interior panels, racing styled seats, electronic cooling system, power windows as well as electric rear view mirrors. This example is finished in striking Giallo Cromo over a Black leather interior. The car has been lightly driven with just 33,332 kilometers (20,711 miles) displayed one the odometer at the time of cataloging. This yellow stunner is in overall tidy condition and has been well preserved by its current and previous owners. The car will come accompanied with its factory books/manuals, records as well as the rare build file acquired from the De Tomaso factory.

Its owners have used the car very sparingly, as evidenced by the average 650 miles driven per year and have more importantly, kept the car running through routine maintenance and recurrent short drives. Both inside and out the car presents very well. These 90 Si Pantera's are extremely rare, with only 41 examples ever built. Of those 41 made, two were destroyed in crash testing, and one was destined for the De Tomaso museum. This left only 38 units to ever be offered to the public for sale. Of those 38 units sold, four cars were converted into Targa models. It has been rumored that only 31 coupes have survived today, making this one hard to find Berlinetta. When you factor in that these vehicles were never offered in the United States, this is truly a rare opportunity to find one on offer on US shores.

Now is a wonderful opportunity to get behind the wheel of a highly desirable last iteration of the Pantera. Sure to attract attention wherever it goes, this Gandini designed Italian thoroughbred will be a fine addition to any stable.
