THE PORSCHE 930

"It offers the finest blend of ultimate performance and refinement I have ever come across..." – Paul Frère on the Porsche 911 Turbo.

Much of the Porsche 911's development had resulted from the factory's racing program, and it was the then FIA Group 4 homologation rules, which required 400 road cars to be built, which spurred the development of 'Project 930' - the legendary 911/930 Turbo. In production from April 1975, the Turbo married a KKK turbocharger to the 3.0-liter Carrera RSR engine, in road trim a combination that delivered 260bhp for a top speed of 155mph. But the Turbo wasn't just about top speed, it was also the best-equipped 911 and amazingly flexible - hence only four speeds in the gearbox - being capable of racing from a standstill to 100mph in 14 seconds.

The Turbo's characteristic flared wheelarches and 'tea tray' rear spoiler had already been seen on the Carrera model while the interior was the most luxurious yet seen in a 911, featuring leather upholstery, air conditioning and electric windows. For 1978 the Turbo's engine was enlarged to 3.3 liters, gaining an intercooler in the process; power increased to 300bhp and the top speed of what was the fastest-accelerating road car of its day went up to 160mph. Due to strong emission regulation in the US, the Turbo was not imported for the US market between 1979 and 1984, but retuned in 1985, now equipped with upgraded Motronic engine management systems. Targa and Cabriolet versions were also introduced.

The final production year of the legendary 930 Turbo was 1989, and these desirable end-of-the-line cars were fitted with the prized Getrag G50 five-speed transaxle, ensuring few cars would compete with the 930's unquestionable dominance on street and on the racetrack. More refined than hitherto yet retaining its high-performance edge, the Porsche 930 Turbo sold in the thousands, arguably becoming the definitive sports car of its age.

THE CAR OFFERED

Offered here is a very well-kept, low mileage Porsche 930 Turbo Cabriolet from the final year of production for Series I - 930 Turbos. Unlike preceding Turbos, the 1989 model year featured the Getrag G50 five-speed transaxle which provided better response by spreading the engine power over narrower bands. The 0 to 60 mph time was quoted by Porsche as only 5.3 seconds!

This exceptional 930 Cabriolet is the 252nd built in a small North American model production run of 464 cars and was completed in the Zuffenhausen-based Porsche Factory on October 13, 1988 as a 1989 model-year car. The car is finished in classic Porsche Guards Red with a Black Leather interior and Black cabriolet top exactly as it was built, neatly set off with Fuchs wheels showing polished rims. The leather cover on the base of the driver's seat is newer and an exact replacement. Optional equipment on this 930 included: Leather Steering Wheel with Raised Hub, a Tonneau Cover, Blaupunkt Radio (Reno), Limited Slip Differential, a Heated Right Seat, Amplifier System, and US Standard Emissions.

According to the accompanying CARFAX the car was titled in Indiana on July 8, 1989 showing 1,000 miles. On April 27, 1990, Florida DMV showed mileage as 9,193. On December 6, 1991 mileage was reported as 15,000. On December 2, 1993, mileage reported was 21,000. On December 26, 1995, mileage was reported as 25,000, with the 930 still in Florida. A NJ Title was issued on February 27, 1997 showing 27,465 miles. On November 20, 1998 following a sale the 930 was again in Florida with mileage showing 28,728 miles. On October 18, 2000, the reported mileage was 35,707. On August 9, 2006, Florida reported mileage as 36,854 miles. The 930 transitioned to Virginia on August 24, 2011 showing 41,000 miles. Shortly afterwards in 2012 it was registered in Tennessee and on August 15, 2014, a service shows 44,790 miles. The car was purchased on February 3, 2017 by a Connecticut Collector who is the Consignor.

In early July 2023 the car received comprehensive servicing by Automobile Associates of Canton, CT, a well-known and highly regarded Porsche Specialist. In addition to fluid and filter changes the ignition wires were replaced and the fuel system and turbo were thoroughly checked. The car presently shows less than 46,000 miles.

With the documented low mileage confirmed by the CARFAX history and visual inspection, this fabulous Porsche presents as an amazingly original and desirable example. A large history of Maintenance Records accompanying the car show continuous care and investment to maintain top performance. Examples of previous work include a new Cabriolet top installed in May of 2014, new front brakes including rotors in June of 2016, and air conditioner work in August 2016 converting the car to R-134A refrigerant. The A/C blows cold.

This Guards Red Cabriolet 930 drives and presents extremely well. It's immediately ready for a fun road trip this Summer, offering an unmatched experience to the new owner. The Turbo boost comes in strong at about 3,500 rpm with significant acceleration. The original Owner's Manual comes with the car along with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity showing this 930 retains its' original as born colors and equipment. This classic and low production number Porsche has all the refinements of the Series I Turbos. The engine is robust and the gearbox has five perfectly spaced gears to select. This 930 is an opportunity not to be missed that will certainly provide the new owner with a thrilling ride in a top-down Classic Turbo Porsche.
