THE CHEVROLET IMPALA

Originally applied to two-door hardtop coupe and convertible versions of Chevrolet's Bel Air in 1958, the Impala name was subsequently used in its own right to signify a top-of-the-range luxury trim level rather than a separate and distinct body style. Marketed as 'All New, All Over Again', Chevrolets were altogether more modern in appearance every year during this period; growing longer, lower and wider than the year before.

The 1958 Impala Sport Convertible was Chevy's prestige car that year with around 55,000 sold and its own over-the-top trim package, including the "pitchfork" on the rear fenders, and the spinner hubcaps. The new 348 cubic-inch motor was side of the body was derived from a truck engine and generated up to 315 horsepower with triple carburetors, though owners grumbled about 9mpg.

THE CAR OFFERED

The Impala was offered with a mind boggling array of engine, transmission, and trim options from a meager straight six to a rip-roaring big block. This example is the latter. Fitted with the biggest motor Chevrolet had yet to offer in a passenger vehicle, a tire melting G-code 348ci V8 topped with triple deuces lies in wait under the hood. Linked to a Powerglide automatic for ease of cruising, the engine has been topped with three aftermarket air cleaners and an alternator to ensure smooth operation. An optional Continental Kit offers easy access to a new tire when you burned through one of the others pressing the go pedal a bit too exuberantly.

Finished in the 1958-only color of Anniversary Gold, the shade was offered to celebrate Chevrolet's 50th anniversary. Inside, the leather interior is finely trimmed in gold with stripes of cream, tan, beige, and copper inset in the center of the seats. Outfitted with a radio, it is reported that the car has an air conditioning system but it is currently disconnected.

Acquired by the current owner a dozen years ago, it had previously been a Texas car before being sent to Europe. While dwarfing just about everything else on the road, the seller reports the car has been regularly serviced and maintained. Complete with its FIVA identification card, old Texas title (for reference), and original owner's manual, this jet age example of the future we were promised in stunning Palm Springs Mid-Century is ready to cruise to a new owner.
