THE ROLLS-ROYCE CORNICHE

Recalling its glamorous Grandes Routières of pre-war days such as the Phantom II Continental, Rolls-Royce's final coachbuilt models - entrusted to the company's in-house coachbuilder Mulliner, Park Ward - were limited to just two, a two-door coupé or similar convertible. The demand for these more glamorous alternatives to the much more numerous Silver Shadow was strong right from the start, a state of affairs that resulted in them being given their own model name - 'Corniche' - in March 1971.

Corniche II nomenclature was adopted for the US for the 1986 model year and these improved models remained in showrooms through 1989. Tweaks continued to be made; anti-lock brakes, a major upgrade, were adopted for 1988. The Corniche proved a major success for Rolls-Royce; periodically revised and updated, it remained in production well into the 1990s, the last (Convertible) examples being delivered in 1995.

THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

Ordered new through Symbolic Motors in San Diego, California, this Corniche II is one just 1,234 examples of the model produced. Copies of original factory records show the car was finished as it appears today in Acrylic White with Double Sandlewood fine lines over Sandlewood hides with Magnolia piping and Cumberland Stone carpets with Sandlewood trim all topped by a Cream convertible top. Options selected included trimming the top roll, instrument board roll, underdash trim and radio surround in matching Sandlewood leather, as well as lambswool mouton carpets, Michelin tires, and cocktail requisites in the doors.

Arriving stateside on September 20th, 1985, the car's first owners were Hal and Anastasia Moore. Further records indicate that the car received regular service with receipts on file from the first four years showing some 18,000 miles had been covered by 1989. Remaining in the San Diego area until 2000, the Rolls then head east to the Orlando, Florida area. In 2007, the Rolls was exported to the United Kingdom and entered the current owner's collection a few years later.

Showing nicely today, the Rolls has been subtly modified with a gilt and wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel, hardwired cellular phone in the center armrest, and a body-colored chin spoiler akin to that one found on the rare Corniche S. At some point, the original cocktail decanters and glasses were lost. Showing 57,675 miles, the Corniche has been on static display for the past decade and mechanical recommissioning is recommended before wafting about.

As perfectly suited to Worth Avenue and Rodeo Drive now as it was 38 years ago, this Rolls is ready for its next owner.
