THE PORSCHE 928
"Auto das Jahrzehnts" or car of the decade, as it was referred - the Porsche 928 was for a different sort of individual.
By the late 1960s, executives including Ferry Porsche, began considering the addition of a luxury touring car to their line-up. With slumping sales of the then-current flagship 911, managing director Ernst Fuhrmann, credited for development of the type 547 engine (used in the 550, 356 Carrera GT and GS cars), initiated a design study in 1971 for a new range-topping gran turismo model. Several drivetrain layouts were considered early on including both mid and rear-engined designs. Deciding that a mid-engine layout did not allow enough room in the passenger compartment and a rear-engine layout made emission and noise control difficult, a front-engine, rear-wheel drive transaxle layout was selected. The chosen front-mounted type M28 single overhead camshaft, water-cooled V8 engine displaced 4.5liters and featured a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system. Combining a transmission, axle, and differential in one integrated assembly in the rear, this new 'type 928' achieved near 50/50 weight distribution- realizing a combination sports coupe and luxury sedan. A car technically different from others on the road had the right to look different. Lay-flat/pop-up headlamps borrowed from the Miura, flared wheel-arches and curvy flanks caught the attention of many influential characters of the 20th century including the likes of the Risky Business movie production, Stanley Kubrick and Steve Jobs.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This classic 1st generation 928 was made in the 1979 model-year production run and left the Porsche factory exactly as it appears today, with the GT bodywork finished in Black Metallic (A2) over a tan leather interior. The new 928 featured the preferred 5-speed manual transaxle and was destined for the US market as a desirable "slicktop" sunroof delete example. Recent enhancements on the car boast a large list of upgrades including new paint, much of the leather interior redone, mechanical servicing addressed and up to date, the iconic phone dial wheels refinished along with new tires, OEM radio added as well as a recent pass of smog testing complete the large list of recent work. Although this example does show higher mileage at approximately 159,000 on the odometer, be rest assured that this well-maintained example will be ready to hit the highway for some grand touring enjoyment. This coupe is accompanied with a Porsche Production Specifications certificate, owner's manual, many receipts and other records from previous ownership as well as the current receipts for the restoration work performed, which is close to $50,000 of recent work. The Porsche for those who think different, this 928 is ready for its next warp speed odyssey.
