THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
A rare and sought-after Pallas flagship luxury model, this stunning land-bound French spaceship offers an unparalleled mix of ride quality and handling thanks to its calling-card hydropneumatic, self-leveling, adjustable-height suspension system.
Metallic brown is the most 1970's color imaginable, and it suits the car's big, futuristic, Robert Opron-designed Kammtail bodywork very nicely, especially in combo with stock factory wheels and covers as seen here. Note the single windshield wiper, an arrangement made possible by the convex rear window's rain-shedding abilities.
Though certainly distinct and forward-thinking, the CX's exterior is no match for its interior, where a riot of unusual-but-highly-effective ergonomic touches help define one of the most comfortable and beguiling cabins in production car history. Note the single-spoke steering wheel, already an established Citroën signature at the time, along with the rotating drum speedometer and tachometer, and stalkless, pod-mounted controls for the wiper, air horns, and turn signals.
Equally distinct seats resemble expensive handmade lounge chairs of the era, and offer similar levels of cushiness, comfort, and style. Legroom is palatial even on standard wheelbase cars such as the auction example and combined with the aforementioned magic ride quality offered by all CX's, passenger comfort is nearly unrivaled. Like the Porsche 928, rear passengers have their own sunvisors.
Without delving too much into the inner workings of Citroën's brilliant hydropneumatic suspension, it's worth noting that the system provides an incredibly unlikely and uncanny mix of comfort and pin-sharp responses. With four adjustable height settings, as well as automatic self-leveling, the system also provides hydraulic pressure to the marque's speed-sensitive, mechanically decoupled DIRAVI steering system.
Power is from a 2.4 liter gasoline four cylinder, whose beefy 145 lb-ft of torque makes for easy, relaxed progress while remaining perfectly adequate for use on highly trafficked, fast-moving modern roads. Maintained by a knowledgeable and experienced marque specialist, the car's complex suspension and all other systems are reported to be in excellent working condition. Additionally, the car is equipped with an LPG or liquid petroleum tank and can be operated on either this fuel or gasoline at the flip of a switch. A 5-speed manual directs power to the front wheels, and brakes are discs all around.
