THE PORSCHE CARRERA
Porsche developed a reputation with their Carrera model early on for their surprising performance from their small displacement rear-engine sports and racing cars. These 'giant killers' could outperform cars with much higher horsepower figures by making light cars with incredible handling. Referencing Porsche's prowess in the Mexican Carrera Panamericana of the 1950s, Porsche reintroduced the title 'Carrera' in 1973 on the iconic Carrera RS 2.7. In 1974, the Carrera model debuted using a similar 2.7-liter engine, flared fenders, bold graphics and the 'whale tail' spoiler, an unmistakable look used until 1988. Just 528 US-market Carrera 2.7 examples were made for the 1974 model-year, hence they have become increasingly collectible due to their iconic looks, excellent performance and high build quality.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
One of just 246 US-market Carrera Targa examples built for the 1974 model year, this stunning Porsche was purchased in 2015 from a longtime owner who lived in Northern California's Wine Country and had a respectable stable of vintage Porsches. At the time of purchase, the overall condition of the car was very presentable and considerable restoration efforts had previously been made, but it was not running and driving as well as it should be due to lack of use. After arriving in Southern California, the next owner entrusted the specialists at TRE Motorsports and Air Motorsports of Van Nuys, CA with the necessary mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment. On arrival, the car was evaluated and determined to be a very solid and straight car without and signs of accident damage or structural rust. The body panels fit well, and the doors operated with a nice ping. It was complete with some hard-to-replace items such as an original factory ducktail and correct brakes.
The undercarriage confirmed the seller's story that this 911 was indeed a longtime resident of the ultra-dry state of California. So, with good bones on hand and every reason to keep moving forward, the new owner opened his checkbook and let the specialists to do what they saw fit. The engine was disassembled, the magnesium case repaired and prepped for a full engine rebuild. The case was line-bored and fitted with all new internals. The top end was sent out for machining and all new valves. The transaxle was tired, and the limited slip was clunky, so it was completely refurbished. Some paintwork and new graphics were applied, the interior tidied, the and the Targa top was refitted. The Fuchs wheels were refinished in their correct shade of gold and then fitted with new tires. The dash gauges were removed, restored and reinstalled along with all new wiring throughout the car. When completed and the car was performing like it was intended, the receipts totaled $64,488.18 for the work performed.
The money was well-spent, and today this 911 is a joy to drive and is equally as impressive to see. The striking 911 Carrera 2.7-Liter Targa has been fitted with the new Porsche retro-look Bluetooth/Nav capable radio. Few '74/'75 Carreras are presented in such a desirable factory color and livery with matching numbers engine in place, which is all documented by the Porsche-issued Certificate of Authenticity on file.
