THE PORSCHE 930

"It offers the finest blend of ultimate performance and refinement I have ever come across..." – Paul Frère on the Porsche 911 Turbo.

Much of the Porsche 911's development had resulted from the factory's racing program, and it was the then FIA Group 4 homologation rules, which required 400 road cars to be built, which spurred the development of 'Project 930' - the legendary 911/930 Turbo. In production from April 1975, the Turbo married a KKK turbocharger to the 3.0-liter Carrera RSR engine, in road trim a combination that delivered 260bhp for a top speed of 155mph. But the Turbo wasn't just about top speed, it was also the best-equipped 911 and amazingly flexible - hence only four speeds in the gearbox - being capable of racing from a standstill to 100mph in 14 seconds.

The Turbo's characteristic flared wheelarches and 'tea tray' rear spoiler had already been seen on the Carrera model while the interior was the most luxurious yet seen in a 911, featuring leather upholstery, air conditioning and electric windows. For 1978 the Turbo's engine was enlarged to 3.3 liters, gaining an intercooler in the process; power increased to 300bhp and the top speed of what was the fastest-accelerating road car of its day went up to 160mph. Due to strong emission regulation in the US, the Turbo was not imported for the US market between 1979 and 1984, but retuned in 1985, now equipped with upgraded Motronic engine management systems. Targa and Cabriolet versions were also introduced.

The final production year of the legendary 930 Turbo was 1989, and these desirable end-of-the-line cars were fitted with the prized Getrag G50 five-speed transaxle, ensuring few cars would compete with the 930's unquestionable dominance on street and on the racetrack. More refined than hitherto yet retaining its high-performance edge, the Porsche 930 Turbo sold in the thousands, arguably becoming the definitive sports car of its age.

THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

Offered here is an extremely well-kept, low-mileage Cabriolet example of the desirable, final production year of the original 930 Turbo, featuring the Getrag G50 five-speed transaxle. The 142nd example built in the 600-car model-run, this exceptional 930 was completed at the Zuffenhausen-based Porsche factory during August of 1988 as a 1989 model-year car and finished in classic Grand Prix White. A US-market example, it was finished exactly as it appears today, with its looks neatly set off by color-matched Fuchs alloy wheels and a Navy Blue cabriolet top. Inside, the 930 Cabriolet was fully equipped with top-of-the-line features and trimmed in Navy Blue leather with white piping and matching premium carpets.

According to the original owner's manual on file, the 930 was delivered new to California, where a Mr. Leonard G. Davis of Santa Monica took delivery on September 26th, 1988, from the local Porsche Audi agency, Steve Taub Inc. The accompanying CARFAX report has the Porsche in New Jersey in 1989 with just 36 miles, and then records the mileage again in 1999 at 23,569 miles. In 2000, Norwalk, California-based Porsche dealer McKenna Motors offers the 930 for sale with just 25,476 miles on the odometer and performs a major service. The Porsche would remain in Southern California while receiving regular service, maintenance and emission checks at Porsche dealerships until 2015, when it joined the consignors impressive Reno, Nevada-based collection of classic cars.

With just 37,858 miles recorded on the odometer at time of cataloging, a figure documented by the CARFAX report and plainly visible upon inspection of this magnificent Porsche's immaculate original condition, this desirable G50-equipped example of the legendary 930 must be one of the best examples available anywhere. With original finishes intact throughout, this car presents extremely well, and drives like a very lightly used car. The car is offered with original owner's manuals, factory delivery documents and service records, as well as the original tool kit and air compressor. Combining the unmistakable looks of a classic Porsche, the powerful Turbo motor, and the collectability that goes hand in hand with its low production figures, this extraordinary 1989 930 Turbo G-50 Cabriolet should not disappoint.
