Launched at the 1950 Motor Show, Ford's Consul and Zephyr Six broke new ground for the Dagenham firm. Both models were of unitary construction and featured overhead-valve engines, three-speed synchromesh gearboxes and MacPherson strut independent front suspension. The Autocar remarked that the newcomers combined 'typically Ford low-cost motoring with new luxury and performance.' Together with the range-topping six-cylinder Zodiac, which had been introduced for 1954, the Consul and Zephyr were totally redesigned for 1956, emerging in MkII guise larger than before and benefiting from bigger engines, in the Zephyr/Zodiac's case a 2,553cc six that delivered 109bhp, making the generously-sized saloon a 100mph performer. A lengthened wheelbase brought with it better weight distribution, while subsequent MkII developments included a lower roof from February 1959 and front disc brakes, the latter optional from September 1960 and standard from May 1961. Production ceased on the introduction of the MkIII Zephyr/Zodiac for 1962.
This Zodiac MkII comes with its original buff logbook showing that it was registered on 14th July 1961 as '1016 ET' to the West Riding Motor Co in Rotherham. The car is finished in its original two-tone colour combination of turquoise over white, with a grey/white interior, and is equipped with the column-change manual transmission. According to the aforementioned logbook, its first private owner was a Joseph Whittaker of Rotherham, followed in May 1966 by John Haywood, also of Rotherham (see purchase receipt on file). A mechanic by profession, Mr Haywood sold the Zodiac to Malcolm Bishop in March 2007 having owned it for some 41 years (see copy registration document on file). Since joining the Bishop Collection the car has been maintained by the in-house mechanic. Additional paperwork includes sundry bills for parts; two MoTs from the 1980s; and an old-style V5C Registration Certificate. Re-commissioning will be required before the car returns to the road. Sold strictly as viewed.
