Footnotes

It had been 21 years since Rolls-Royce's takeover of Bentley had secured the latter's future, when the Mark VI made its appearance in the catalogue in 1946. Inaugurating 'all-steel' bodies and abandoning wooden body structures, the Mark VI and its Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn sister represented the modern era. Endowed with a sportier character, the Bentleys offered more typical bodies than the 'Flying Lady' firm, always collaborating with the greatest coachbuilders to dress their chassis to their customers' specific orders. It is in this spirit that James Young designed a body almost entirely in aluminium, with the exception of the front wings and the cowl, to dress the Mark VI. The very successful design of this four-seater saloon is characterized by particularly thin windscreen pillars and sharp angles on the roof drop, combined with the very classic curves of the wings. The boot benefits from increased capacity on this bodywork, linked to an exterior luggage rack in the lower part of the rear. The interior remains in purely British in spirit, featuring varnished woodwork, shelves on the back of the front seats, mirrors and ashtrays: the most classic luxury is retained but modernity is not forgotten. Indeed, this James Young Mark VI is equipped with electric windows, an electric windscreen washer, as well as a sunroof. In total, only 56 Mark VIs were bodied as two-door Sports Saloons by James Young, its aluminium construction making it the most expensive version in the catalogue: £4,405 compared to £3,845 for Park Ward's Foursome Drophead Coupé, or another £3,820 for Mulliner's four-door Sports Saloon.

This Bentley Mark VI chassis 'B186CF' was registered in 1948. Unfortunately, its early history is not known but we know that it changed hands in 1975 and was restored in the UK during the 1980s. The mechanical elements, bodywork and upholstery were renovated, obviously with expertise as it appears today in a good state of conservation. The Bentley arrived in Paris, France in 1987 registered '53 GHZ 75' and then in 1993 was acquired at auction by its current owner. 'B186CF' then showed 50,000 miles on the odometer. Today, the car now displays a pleasant patina despite the approximately 20,000 miles driven by its current owner since its 1980s restoration. Indeed, it was our seller's first collector's car and one that he has enjoyed for nearly 30 years until today, maintaining it regularly and methodically so that it is always ready for long journeys. This was done without neglecting the Bentley's appearance, and in 2013 of all of the interior woodwork was restored.
Extremely rare, this aluminium-bodied Bentley Mark VI by James Young is evocative of the final era of great British coachbuilding, when artisans still worked by hand while embracing modern bodywork technology that did not rely on a wooden framework.
