Footnotes

"Here we have one of the quietest and most flexible cars on the market, capable of whispering along in top gear at 10mph or leaping into its 150mph stride on the brief depression of a pedal. A practical touring car, this, with its wide doors and capacious luggage space, yet it has a sheer beauty of line which easily beats the Italians at their own particular game." There have been few better summaries of the Jaguar E-Type's manifest virtues than John Bolster's, penned for Autosport shortly after the car's debut in 1961.

Introduced in 3.8-litre form, the E-Type caused a sensation when it appeared, with instantly classic lines and 150mph top speed. The newcomer's design owed much to that of the racing D-Type: a monocoque tub forming the main structure, while a tubular spaceframe extended forwards to support the engine. The latter was the same 3.8-litre, triple-carburettor 'S' unit first offered as an option on the preceding XK150. An optimistic 265bhp was claimed, but whatever the installed horsepower, the E-Type's performance did not disappoint; firstly, because it weighed around 500lb (227kg) less than the XK150 and secondly because aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer used experience gained with the D-Type to create one of the most elegant and efficient shapes ever to grace a motor car.

Today, the E-Type's graceful lines live on in modern Jaguar sports cars, and there can be little doubt that William Lyons' sublime creation would feature in any knowledgeable enthusiast's 'Top Ten' of the world's most beautiful cars of all time. Indeed, even Enzo Ferrari felt obliged to concede that the E-type was 'the most beautiful car ever made'.

An original left-hand drive roadster, this early E-Type was acquired by the current owner in 1998. It was his beloved 'daily summer classic car', which was kept garaged with the ignition key permanently inserted and ready to start at any time - just as his friend and hero Steve McQueen used to do.

The E-Type has participated in several historic rallies such as the Trentino Classic, Silvretta Classic, etc. Unfortunately the engine was damaged in 2009 at this rally, necessitating a rebuild (see below). The car also took part in all editions of the Chronoswiss Classic Rallye with several movie stars (see photograph on file of actress Jutta Speidel with her mother in 2009).

This car was originally black with grey interior but was refinished some time ago in the current attractive combination of light blue metallic paintwork with dark blue leather interior. The soft-top is dark blue and in impeccable condition. We are advised that the engine was overhauled in 2010 with a replacement cylinder head and is in running condition (the block is original). There are some cosmetic blemishes on the body that may require attention in furture; the interior is nicely preserved; the gearbox shifts well; although the electrics would benefit from some work. Described as looking solid throughout, the car has recently been fettled into running order having stood for a while and is now reported to drive and shift well. A charming example that is in overall presentable condition. Notable features include upgraded brakes and a stainless-steel exhaust system. Registered in Germany.

1962 Jaguar Type E 3.8-Litre « série 1 » roadster
Châssis n° 876676
Moteur n° R3987-9
