Footnotes

"For anyone wishing to give their Mercedes that extra personal touch, Mercedes-AMG GmbH has just the answers. The Daimler-Chrysler subsidiary offers the combined experience of Mercedes-Benz and AMG in the field of high-quality enhancements for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and puts the emphasis firmly on individuality when creating the customer's dream Mercedes." - Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
AMG, which is now the official performance division of Mercedes-Benz, has a long history of producing high-performance derivatives of Mercedes' standard production vehicles, and these improved versions enjoy an enthusiastic following world-wide, with prominent figures of the motor sport, entertainment, sport and business communities being counted among aficionados. The ultra-rare car offered here is one of AMG's earliest Mercedes-Benz projects, dating from when the Affalterbach-based company was an independent entity. It is based on the Type W123 280E, a model first introduced in 1975. The 280E was powered by a 2.8-litre fuel-injected six, in European trim producing 177bhp (DIN). The 280E remained in production until 1985.

This exceptional 280E W123 was delivered new in May 1982 and seems to have gone to AMG in Affalterbach one month later, in June 1982, to be ready two months later, in August 1982. The first service had been carried out at 1,216 kilometres from new in May 1982 in Kassel, Germany. AMG Motorenbau GmbH's invoice for their work was for a staggering total of 47,706 DM (copy of the invoice on file). It is believed that after modification by AMG, the Mercedes was shipped straight to its first owner in Ontario, Canada, where the car would remain for almost its entire life.

After the first owner's death, the Mercedes remained with his wife, who in turn sold it a couple years later to the current owner in the Netherlands. The latter considered himself to be very lucky to get hold of this AMG-tuned 280E, as they are an exceptionally rare find. The sunroof, Recaro seats, AMG special steering wheel, loudspeakers, steigerungsleistung (increased power: 40-45bhp), AMG five-speed manual gearbox, and all other custom options are fully detailed on AMG's accompanying invoice.

This car has clearly been well looked-after and today is presented in highly original condition with only 67,000 miles covered from new. All wonderfully preserved, the lovely Recaro seats and the entire interior just breathes 1980s. Unrestored, unmolested and believed never resprayed, this car represents a unique opportunity to own an incredibly original and very early AMG. With early AMG's becoming incredibly sought-after, this is an exciting opportunity.

The car comes with the following:
Original service book (stamped in May 1982 prior to delivery to AMG)
Old Canadian Title in the first owner's wife's name (EU import taxes have been paid)
Mercedes-Benz Datenkart
Owner's manual
Ultra-rare US-specification headlights
Original tools

Datenkart Mercedes-Benz
Manuel du propriétaire
Rarissimes phares aux normes américaines
Outils d'origine
