1953 Bentley R-Type 4½-Litre 'Standard Steel' Saloon Chassis no. B353LTO Engine no. B176T
The policy of rationalisation that began in the late 1930s continued at Rolls-Royce after the war with the introduction of standard bodywork on the MkVI Bentley. Rolls-Royce's first post-WW2 product, the MkVI was introduced in 1946, a year ahead of the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith.
The Crewe-built range featured a new design of independent front suspension, hydraulic front brakes and a new 4,257cc, six-cylinder, 'F-head' (inlet-over-exhaust) power unit. The latter was enlarged to 4,566cc in 1951 while a much-needed improvement to the standard bodywork arrived mid-way through 1952 in the shape of an enlarged boot together with associated alterations to the rear wings and suspension, subsequent models incorporating these changes being known as the R-Type Bentley and E-Series Silver Dawn.
Left-hand drive chassis number 'B350LTO' was manufactured in June 1953 and has the Rolls-Royce/General Motors Hydramatic four-speed automatic transmission recently made available as an option (and would be standardised on the successor Bentley S-Type). The Bentley was retailed by Grund & Co of Utrecht, Holland and first owned by one C von Lindern of Wassenaar, Holland. Special features included flashing indicators; export bumpers; high frequency horns; colonial front springing; km/h speedometer; and two fog lamps in place of the standard centre lamp. The car's original colour scheme was Dual Grey metallic with blue hide interior trim.
The current owner purchased the Bentley in June 2010 from J K de Vaal of De Lier, Holland. It has since been on static display and will require recommissioning prior to road use. Accompanying documentation consists of copies of the 2010 bill of sale and old Dutch registration papers.
