Footnotes

Launched in 1966, the 420 was the final incarnation of Jaguar's amazingly successful medium-sized saloon line that had commenced way back in 1955 with the Mark 1. The newcomer was, in fact, a face-lifted S-Type, the latter's Mark 2-style front end having been replaced by one strongly resembling that of the larger Mark X. A development of the hugely successful Mark 2, the S-Type/420 differed mechanically by virtue of its independent rear suspension, the latter first seen in saloon form on the Mark X. The 4.2-litre XK six-cylinder engine in twin-carburettor 245bhp form was standard on the 420, which also incorporated other improvements such as alternator electrics, a limited-slip differential and dual-circuit brakes. Variomatic power-assisted steering was an option. When equipped with Borg Warner automatic transmission, top speed was somewhat reduced but acceleration remained unaffected. Comparing automatic Jaguar saloons it has tested, Motor reckoned that "the 420 has a useful edge over the 3.8 S type in the middle speed ranges and is just about level pegging with the more powerful (but much heavier) Mark X". Despite possessing superior handling and greater range than the Mark 2, the S-Type and 420 have lived in the shadow of their illustrious predecessor and tend to be undervalued even today.

Unfortunately, nothing is known of the history of this automatic transmission Jaguar 420. The only paperwork consists of old Dutch registration papers and an export document dated 24th May 2011, which is believed to be when the car was acquired by the vendor. It has since been on static display and will require recommissioning prior to road use.
