Footnotes

Founded as a bicycle maker in 1868 and one of Britain's oldest motor manufacturers, Humber concentrated on producing cars of high quality and this policy continued after its acquisition by the Rootes Group. Under Rootes' guidance, Hillman concentrated on models with mass-market appeal while Humber was pitched at a wealthier clientele. The Super Snipe first appeared in the late 1930s and the first major mechanical revision came in 1952 when a new chassis was introduced and the long-running sidevalve six replaced by an overhead-valve Commer unit. Re-styled at the same time, this new Super Snipe progressed through Marks IV, IVA and IVB before being superseded by the unitary construction Series I in 1958. The Series I Super Snipe's new bodyshell was shared with the contemporary four-cylinder Hawk, but the former's engine was an all-new 2.65-litre six-cylinder unit. Improvements to the Super Snipe appeared almost annually: a 2.96-litre engine and front-wheel disc brakes arriving in 1959 (Series II); a four-headlamp front end in 1960 (Series III) and a slightly more powerful engine in September 1962 (Series IV). Production of these large, luxurious Humbers finally ceased in 1967, the Super Snipe Series VA being the last of the line.

Representing the very best of British motoring luxury, this automatic-transmission Super Snipe was acquired by the owner in circa 2014 and no paperwork is offered with the car. It has since been on static display and will require recommissioning prior to road use.
