Bonehenge, a little Palace for Illy by Birds Portchmouth Russum Architects

Designed for Illy, the Blue Roan Cocker Spaniel, who is an integral part of both the Portchmouth family and also BPR Architects. Illy is a 'Cockney Cocker' living in Bethnal Green, with a nose for an opportunity and is readily partial to 'half inching' a bit of 'Lilley & Skinner'. In 2014, Illy joined Birds Portchmouth Russum Architects as the visiting Health and Welfare Officer. Her visits raised morale and encouraged overworked employees to participate in vigorously healthy exercise.

The challenge was to design a little palace for Illy that properly reflected her regal status, from which she could gently muse upon this maddening world. An enthusiastic and experienced eco warrior, Illy required that her new home be sustainable, enjoy generous natural light and harvest fresh rainwater for her drinking bowl. The design is inspired by the cocker spaniel's hereditary characteristics of circling prior to settling down to rest – intuitively compressing long grass to make soft bedding, hence the elliptical shape.
