THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

Certainly a 'sight for sore eyes', we believe that this late Mark III Coupe was purchased by Mr. Lutz as a project or spares car to assist with his restoration of the drophead coupe.

Its path to Mr. Judson is not known at the time of writing, but from a copy of its original build sheet we have been able to confirm that as new, '1722' was ordered through West Coast Aston Martin agents, Hornburgs on March 25, 1959. Its first owner is quoted as 'Fredrick R. Weisman' of 1140 Angelo Drive, Beverly Hills and his new car must have been a striking sight in Beverly Hills as it was finished in Champagne paintwork, with a beige Connolly leather interior. The order details note that 'non-standard equipment' as the company phrased it included hydro booster, chrome roadwheels, polished rear drum brakes, and a lid with lock and key for the glove compartment.

The acquisition of what may have been considered a more obscure British make of car in the late 1950s probably reflects Mr. Weisman's interest in art and design as well as for cars, for we believe that he was the very same Frederick R. Weisman who would go on to found an Art Museum in his name at Pepperdine and Minneapolis University which survives to this day. A serial entrepreneur, he amassed his wealth principally as a pioneering franchisee for Toyota, becoming one of only three distributors of the brand in the USA in 1970. He believed passionately in sharing his wealth and was a major donor to art institutions around the world, giving some $20 million in 1993 as his health waned.

How long Mr. Weisman retained his Aston Martin for is not known at the time of writing, but by the spring of 1989, and quite possibly for a while prior to this it was stationed at Harry's Auto Wrecking in Pacoima, California. It traded to a David Tomlison of Valley Blvd, Los Angeles and then onto Judson Lutz of Martinsville, Indiana in March that year.

At some point latterly along that journey the Aston appears to have been in a fire and to have also lost its original engine and transmission. Potentially a basis for a race car, it may certainly take some imagination, a lot of enthusiasm and no doubt funds to return it to the road, but perhaps it is just the entry to owning an Aston Martin that an aspiring collector on a budget needs.
