THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

Introduced in 1966, the Bronco represented Ford's first venture into the market for small Sport Utility Vehicles, and was conceived by the same management and engineering team responsible for the trend-setting Ford Mustang. Although it used the axles from the F-100 pickup truck, the rest of the Bronco - chassis, body, and suspension - were unique to the model. Inline six-cylinder and V8 engines were offered across three body styles: three-door station wagon, two-door roadster, and two-door pickup truck. Styling was strictly utilitarian: flat glass, simple bumpers, and effectively identical left/right door skins all being part of the mix. Typical of an American product, the options list was lengthy, including front bucket seats, a rear bench, rev counter, CB radio, tow-bar, power takeoff, auxiliary fuel tank, and a winch. A considerable success for Ford, the 1st Generation Bronco was built until 1977 when it was replaced by a larger model based on the F-Series chassis.

The recent decision by Ford to revive the model name has brought attention to the Bronco, reminding a whole new generation of collectors of this fun alternative to some of the more ubiquitous old trucks on the road.

This striking example is offered in beautiful condition. It decodes as having been built in Michigan in November 1967 in the Half Cab form that you see it today and fitted with a 170cid six. Today it can be found having benefitted from a sympathetic restoration of what the owner believes was a very original and solid basis, judging from the general honesty of the bodywork. For many years the truck lived in Virginia, before migrating north to Maine, before moving to the Greenwich area.

Finished in Rangoon Red with white accents and grill and a color coded red and white interior, only the black extension wheel arches appear to be later additions. Recently exercised for photography having been static through the winter, the Bronco burst into life, its thunderous power unit seemingly ready for action this summer.
