Chrysler Model 70 Bluebird Sports reproduction 1925
Châssis n° 40086
Moteur n° 74274

1925 Chrysler Model 70 'Bluebird' Sports Reconstruction
Chassis no. 40086
Engine no. 74274

This unique car is a 1925 Chrysler (Model 70) that has been rebuilt and re-bodied to faithfully replicate Sir Malcolm Campbell's Brooklands Outer Circuit racer. Campbell held franchises for Itala and Ballot cars at his Bluebird Garage on Chelsea's fashionable King's Road, to which he added Chrysler shortly after the American company's foundation.

Produced at the old Chalmers plant in Detroit and introduced in January 1924, Walter P Chrysler's first automobile was an innovative, medium priced, six-cylinder car of better-than-average performance, as numerous motor sport successes would soon demonstrate. Offering a $5,000 specification for under $1,500, the Chrysler Model 70 featured hydraulic brakes, aluminium pistons, full-pressure lubrication and a tubular front axle, and was able to reach 70mph comfortably – racers everywhere took notice. Not surprisingly, it was an outstanding success, 32,000 being sold in the first year of production.

Malcolm Campbell was one of the Brooklands track's shareholders and had his own garage at the circuit, the 'Campbell Shed'. He competed at the Weybridge track throughout the 1920s and 1930s, and broke the Land Speed Record on nine occasions during this period using a variety of 'Bluebird' cars powered by both Rolls-Royce and Napier engines. Seizing the opportunity to promote the Bluebird Garage's new franchise, he instructed his racing mechanic Leo Villa to modify a Chrysler 70, which was bodied by coachbuilders Jarvis & Sons Ltd of Wimbledon, a firm specialising in sports and racing car bodies. Driven by Campbell, the original Chrysler Bluebird won the Short Handicap at Brooklands on 12th September 1925, averaging 99.61mph. Sold soon after to one T H Bouverie, who raced it at Southport Beach, the original Bluebird has not been heard of since the late 1920s.

This one-off was constructed by Ray Jones in Australia between 2000 and 2004. The car competed at both Goodwood events in 2006, was driven at the Festival of Speed by Octane magazine editor Robert Coucher, and featured in the October 2006 edition of that magazine. It has also competed at the Historic Le Mans, various VSCC events in the UK, and at the major Australian classic racing festival at Philip Island. Highly tuned, the engine is suitable for fast road/race use and has proven to be very reliable. The car was timed at 120mph (193km/h) at Le Mans and is producing more power than Campbell's car would have had in period. The body is all aluminium and the rebuild has been executed to the highest standards.

This car is highly regarded at the Brooklands Museum where it was on display for a time in 2007 and has an open invitation to their events and to be displayed there. It participated in the Brooklands Centenary event in 2007 and was invited to and competed in the 'Double Twelve' at the end of June in 2008.

The current vendor has owned the Chrysler since circa 2009/2010 and has participated with it at the Circuit des Remparts in Angoulême and some minor club events in Belgium. The car is now fitted with a Moss four-speed gearbox. The original 'box is included in the sale and the car also comes with a spare wheel and new drums for the brakes. EU duty has been paid and the car is currently registered in Belgium. Formerly road-registered in the UK (as 'BF 4809'), this unique car comes with an interesting history file containing in-period press cuttings, a copy of the Octane article, and a VSCC 'Buff Form'. Powerfully evocative of motor racing's between-the-wars 'Golden Age', 'Bluebird' is eligible for a wide variety of the most prestigious motor sports events worldwide and is sure to provide the fortunate next owner with a most exciting driving experience.
