1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2-Litre Supersport Cabriolet Registration no. F465 AEL Chassis no. WP0ZZZ91ZKS150688 Engine no. 63K01921
Recognising that many customers admired the Turbo model's aggressive 'wide body' appearance but had no need of its enhanced performance, Porsche offered the 'Supersport Equipment' package. Also known as the 'Turbo Look', it not only consisted of the Turbo's distinctive extended wheelarches and front/rear spoilers but also its upgraded brakes, suspension, wheels and tyres. This option had been introduced in response to the many independent specialists offering such conversions, and also enabled Porsche to offer a Turbo lookalike in the United States market where emissions legislation had forced the Turbo's (temporary) withdrawal from sale. In Porsche nomenclature the Supersport Equipment package was known as option 'M491', with just 75 C16 cars produced.
We can be reasonably certain though, that few right-hand drive M491-equipped 911 Carrera Cabriolets were sold in the UK, making this example a rare beast indeed. Finished in the rare Schiefergrau Metallic (22D) livery, the Supersport comes with its original book pack including the guarantee and maintenance book confirming that it was delivered new on 26th January 1989 via Charles Follet (City) Ltd, the first registered keeper. The first service was carried out by Follet on 5th July 1989 at 2,361 miles and there are subsequent stamps for 1990, 1991, 1992 (twice), 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 (79,198 miles), 2013 (98,213 miles), and 2015 (98,995 miles). In addition, the rear drive shaft gaiters were replaced in 2016 and minor services carried out by Charles Ivey in 2017, while in 2018 Charles Ivey removed the engine and gearbox to replace the clutch. Invoices on file show that the car was fitted with new front brake discs and pads and received a pre-MoT check in November 2020.
The current vendor purchased the Porsche from Hendon Way in 2015 (invoice on file). The current UK V5C confirms 13 former keepers. Obviously well maintained, the car is MoT'd until November 2022.
Perspective buyers should note that F465AEL has been the subject of a category D (damaged but repairable) insurance loss. A letter on file from the renowned Porsche repairers Bodytechnics of Slough states that the insurers considered the vehicle to be a loss due to the hood mechanism replacement being delayed for several months and the high cost of a replacement vehicle. The category is registered on 3rd June 1997 and values at this time for a Super Sport would have been in the region of £10,000- £15,000. The letter confirms that it was repaired using genuine Porsche parts and to Porsche standard. Adding to the authenticity of the claim from the letter, the car itself still presents its rare original under bonnet factory code sticker, and the overall observation of the engine bay displays no evidence of major damage.
Possibly the ultimate version of the 3.2 Carrera was the 'Option M491-Turbo-look', or 'SuperSport Equipment' (SSE), is a rare beast. With only 75 C16 UK cars in total finding their way here, and of these only 39 were the Targa or full convertible models.
