THE ALFA ROMEO 1750
It was in 1923 that Enzo Ferrari, persuaded Vittorio Jano to leave FIAT's racing department and join him at Alfa Romeo. One of the most gifted and influential automobile engineers of all time, Jano would not only supervise Alfa Romeo's Grand Prix racing program but also design its road cars. This happy state of affairs resulted in the latter emerging as some of the most exciting of their day, establishing the Milanese marque's reputation for producing sporting driver's cars second to none. A logical derivative of the Tipo 6C 1500, itself directly descended from Jano's all-conquering P2 that had won the World Championship in 1925, the Tipo 6C 1750 arrived in 1929 boasting a derivative of the 1500's six-cylinder engine, enlarged to 1,752cc. Built in single-cam Turismo and twin-cam Sport (later renamed Gran Turismo) variants, the 6C 1750 was an exciting fast sports car combining light weight with sparkling performance. The chassis, also a product of Jano's thoughts applied to a clean sheet of paper, was low and lightweight, featuring semi-elliptical springs that passed through the front axle. The 6C 1750 would go on to be victorious over much larger and more powerful machinery, the triumph of balance, quickness and almost thought-control responsiveness over ponderous leviathans.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This lovely example of a classic Alfa Romeo was a factory approved venture from the Alfa Romeo headquarters to recreate one of its most iconic models from its glory days. The classic 6C 1750 Gran Sport Spider Zagato was the inspiration for this fantastic recreation. Alfa Romeo chose famous Milan based coachbuilder, Zagato to build the body, just as they did on the legendary model of the 1930s it inspired. The Gran Sport Quattroruote was born and received its name from the influence of the major Italian car magazine called Quattroruote. The popular magazine published an article in one of its issues, which sparked the idea of this fabulous collaboration between Alfa and Zagato.
The first prototype was built in 1965 and the first production version was unveiled in 1966 at the New York Auto Show. With just 92 left hand drive units made, as well as 10 right hand drive examples, the Gran Sport Roadster's are rarely seen on the market. These Alfa's were built on the 101-series Giulia Spider chassis while the powertrain was the same as found on the 105-series Giulia TI. With the chassis and mechanicals set, it was off to Zagato for the body assembly. With the complete underpinnings from Alfa Romeo, the exquisite coachwork and design from Zagato, this real production vehicle was the first of its type from the car manufacturer being that they never produced a 'throwback' model from the factory.
This Roadster presents nicely throughout and has been with the current owner for approximately seven years. The car received a restoration last year which rejuvenated the exterior as well as the new interior. The car will come with a file containing details of the work completed. Much of the restoration was handled by the team at Hollywood autobody of Clear Lake, California. The Borrani wheels were coated in black for a stunning look against the fantastic two-tone red and black exterior color combination. This '4R' is mechanically sound and ready to be enjoyed by its next caretaker. Known by many to be a truly fun driver while being quicker than other Alfa's of it era due to its lighter weight. A wonderful opportunity to own a rare, factory built Italian hot rod.
