'So long as the British motorcycle industry continues to produce machines of the caliber of the current Royal Enfield Bullet, there is no need to debate upon "the survival of the single".' Written in 1960, Motor Cycling's words would turn out to be extraordinarily prophetic, as least as far as the Bullet's survival was concerned, as it remains in production in India to this day. 'A straightforward ohv design, as this sports roadster proves, can produce ample performance - combined here with exceptional fuel economy,' Motor Cycling concluded.
Enfield had revived the Bullet name in 1948 for a sensational new 350 sports bike with swinging-arm rear suspension and, after the prototypes' debut in the Colmore Cup trial, the Bullet went on to achieve its first major success in the ISDT later in the year. The newcomer featured an overhead-valve engine that housed its dry-sump oil tank in a compartment in the rear of the crankcase, to which the four-speed gearbox was rigidly bolted in a form of semi-unit construction. The Bullet could be had in road, trials or scrambles versions, with equipment and gearing to suit the application; there was even a racer in the mid-1950s. The 500cc Bullet first joined the range in 1953. When production of both Bullets ceased in 1962, the name passed to the 350cc version of the unit-construction Crusader 250.
Imported to the US on behalf of Mr. Jacobs in 2002, this example is accompanied by some historical UK registration paperwork dating back to its original owner. It has been on display for a number of years, so a good recommissioning would be in order prior to kicking the big single cylinder back to life.
