1970 Jawa Speedway

1970 Jawa Speedway
Frame no. 3997
Engine no. 4536

Czechoslovakia's National Arms Factory diversified into motorcycle manufacture in 1929 when company founder Frantisek Janacek obtained the rights to a design from the German Wanderer factory, combining the first two letters of each of the names to create the 'Jawa' marque. Jawa's operations were combined with those of erstwhile rivals CZ in 1949, and throughout the succeeding two decades the marque's main claim to fame was an outstanding run of success in the ISDT and in international moto-cross. The Sixties would be the marque's glory days in the latter, but the greatest successes for the marque were of course in Speedway racing, where brakeless and hard-tailed single-speed Jawas dominated throughout the 60's and 70's, and won multiple championships with Kiwi hero Ivan Mauger.

While the competition history of this specific machine is unknown, it appears to be complete and in a condition of having just retired from racing prior to going on display. Having been part of Mr. Jacobs' collection for several years, the motorcycle presents with a good patina commensurate with its age, and would require a full re-commissioning before being pout through its paces on the track again. This motorcycle is sold on a Bill of Sale.
