Footnotes

Founded by Louis Renault and his brothers Marcel and Fernand in 1898, the company that would become France's biggest automobile manufacturer started humbly enough, with a solitary 1¾hp De Dion-engined prototype, the sprung rear axle of which would soon be copied by many contemporaries. Production at the Billancourt factory was soon under way on a large scale, demand for its products being enhanced by the performance of Renault cars in the great inter-city races so popular in France at the turn of the 19th Century.

From the outset Renault engineering was of the highest quality and the arrival of multi-cylinder models really put the company on the map. By 1904 Renault was building its own engines: large-capacity fours at first, followed by the AX twin that later developed into the AG, famous for its WWI role as the 'Taxi de la Marne'.

Introduced in 1925, the Renault Type NN was a slightly larger version of the Type KJ of 1923. The KJ had incorporated a number of technological advances that were carried over to the NN. Most significant of these was a new 951cc four-cylinder sidevalve engine with detachable cylinder head, the first Renault power unit with this feature. The steel chassis incorporated semi-elliptic front springing and a transverse leaf spring at the rear where the axle was located by a pair of trailing arms. Only the rear wheels were braked, a separate transmission brake being retained, while the gearbox was a three-speeder. The NN shared all the KJ's chassis details but was built on a longer wheelbase. Depending on the final drive ratio specified, the NN's top speed was in the region of 41 to 56km/h.

Finished in Burgundy with black interior, this NN is in good overall condition for its age. The chassis is clean and the tyres are in good overall condition (the fronts are new), while the hood frame and soft-top likewise are in good condition. The car has not been driven for some considerable time and failed to start when inspected. It will need a thorough check over and careful re-commissioning before returning to the road.
