Footnotes
Recognising the need to widen the appeal of the already-successful DB2, Aston Martin responded with the DB2/4, introducing its new four-seater model in October 1953.
David Brown's acquisition of Tickford Ltd in 1953 led to bodywork for the revised MkII model being manufactured by the Newport Pagnell coachbuilder. While mechanically very little different from its predecessor, the DB2/4 MkII was readily identifiable by its subtly altered lines.
Two years after the introduction of the DB2/4 MkII came the DB MkIII - the '2/4' suffix being dropped - 551 of which, mainly saloons, were made between March 1957 and July 1959. Externally the most obvious change was the adoption of a DB3S-style grille, this re-styled nose giving the car a more imposing look, while the interior boasted a re-designed dashboard with instruments grouped in a cowled panel ahead of the driver. The 3-litre engine offered at least 162bhp and benefited from an extensive re-design by Tadek Marek (newly arrived from Austin) featuring, among other improvements, a stiffer block, stronger crankshaft and a new cylinder head with bigger valves. Elsewhere there were improvements to both clutch and gearbox; Laycock overdrive became available and front disc brakes were standard rather than optional after the first 100 cars had been built. The MkIII was faster than any of its predecessors with a top speed of 120mph (193km/h).
Left-hand drive chassis number '1425' was sold new in France and purchased by the immediately preceding owner in 1980 having had only one owner previously. Finished in Old English White with Bordeaux leather interior, the car is an older restoration having benefited from a complete, 'frame off' rebuild undertaken by renowned marque specialists Garage Lamy. This is what was stated when the current owner purchased the Aston at the Bonhams Monaco sale in May 2007 (Lot 152), but there is now no paperwork on file to substantiate the work carried out. It should be noted that this car's original engine was number '1054', the current engine, '940' having started life in chassis '1321'. This is a solid DB Mark III with a good looking interior. It requires some attention to the paint and bodywork, probably a full respray to make it look consistent around the car. Due to a long period in storage, a full inspection of the running gear and engine will be required. Please also note import taxes will be liable if the car is to remain in the EU.
