LOT 43 ¤
An 'Aviator' mascot by John Hassell, British, circa 1918,
During the Shackelton-Rowett Antarctic Expedition of 1921-22, Major Roderick C Carr (1891-1971), a new Zealander in the RAF, was part of the crew of the R.Y.S. Quest, listed as a pilot, unfortunately the Avro Baby seaplane which was to be loaded at Cape Town became unserviceable because of a shortage of parts and then unavailable because the voyage had to be changed owing to a delayed start in Rio de Janeiro with engine trouble, so Carr helped in the labs on the Quest with the Scientific Research. The seaplane was returned to the UK with the other expedition supplies not collected en route and reunited with Major Carr upon his return to the UK in September 1922. Later in his RAF career Roderick Carr became an Air Marshal and deputy chief of staff to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force in 1945.
