Footnotes

There had been expensive, limited edition M-Series models before the M3 but it was the latter's arrival in 1985 that brought BMW Motorsport's premier 'M-Power' performance brand within the reach of less wealthy enthusiasts. The original (E30) four-cylinder M3 resulted from BMW's need for a car suitable for Group A racing, the rules stipulating that 5,000 should be made in the first year of production. The next and successive generations all used inline six-cylinder engines until the arrival of the E90 Series in 2007 brought with it a switch to a V8. Coupé, convertible and saloon versions were made, all powered initially by BMW's 4.0-litre S65 V8 producing 414bhp (420PS). As well as the first V8, the E90 Series was also the first M3 to offer a seven-speed Getrag DCT gearbox as an option. When equipped with the DCT 'box, the M3 could race to 100km/h (62mph) in only 4.6 seconds.

Special editions had been a feature of M3 production from the very start in 1985, and one of the E90 Series' most sought-after is the CRT (Carbon Racing Technology). Produced during 2011 only, the CRT was powered by the same 4.4-litre S65 engine as the track-focussed M3 GTS but retained more luxury features. The CRT's bonnet and front seats were carbon fibre, helping to reduce weight by approximately 68kg when compared the otherwise similar M3 saloon. CRT production was limited to 67 cars, all numbered with a plaque on the dashboard. The arrival of the successor F80 Series in 2014 marked the return to an inline six-cylinder engine, making the E90 Series unique within the M3 family.

Number '51' of the 67 produced, this desirable M3 CRT was purchased new in 2012 by the lady owner from the official dealer BMW Cecini in Switzerland. It was purchased via a leasing company and not registered in the owner's name until 2017. All the original paperwork is available, including the Swiss service pack, which means that 10 years or 100,000km of servicing is included up to 2022. The last annual service was carried out in April 2021 and the current odometer reading is 49,980 kilometres. A rare car, driveable daily, the CRT is widely recognised as one of the best M3s ever made and even today remains capable of providing an unmatched driving experience.
