Ever since the Series A's arrival in 1937, the Vincent v-twin has been synonymous with design innovation, engineering excellence and superlative high performance. Philip Vincent's machines bristled with innovative features, the brake pedal, footrests, seat height and gear-change lever all being adjustable. The finish was to a very high standard commensurate with the cost of the machine, which was virtually double that of any of its contemporaries. But above all else it was the Vincent's stupendous performance that captivated motorcyclists, whether they could afford one or not. With a top speed approaching 120mph, and bettering it in the Black Shadow's case, the Vincent v-twin was the fastest road vehicle of its day.
This matching-numbers Series-B Rapide was despatched to a dealer called Hallens in Cambridge in May 1949. The current vendor's late father purchased the Vincent in c.1961 for £60 as a complete Series-B Rapide project. In the event, the rebuild was never completed and the Vincent remained under cover at the back of the garage for many years. A potentially most rewarding project, 'BEB 263' will require careful re-assembly and checking before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed. The machine is offered with an old-style continuation logbook (issued 1955); instruction manuals; spare parts list; purchase receipt (1961); and a V5C document. The black-finished engine and Smiths 5" 'Black Shadow' speedometer are particularly noteworthy features.
