The Autumn Sale - The Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show, Stafford|9 October 2021, 12:00 BST|Stafford, Staffordshire County Showground

Property of a deceased's estate
1958 Royal Enfield 693cc Super Meteor
Registration no. not registered
Frame no. 0895
Engine no. SM 4758 OA

Launched in 1948, Royal Enfield's twin followed orthodox lines, though the use of separate barrels and 'heads, and the oil tank's incorporation within the crankcase - a feature inherited from the firm's singles - was unusual. Just like BSA and Triumph, 'Enfield went on to enlarge its twin, eclipsing its rivals with the (nominally) 700cc Meteor for 1953, Britain's largest vertical twin at that time. The crankcase remained fundamentally unchanged, but the bore/stroke dimensions and engine top-end were those of the 350 Bullet, doubled up and restyled. Extensive revisions to the engine and the adoption of a new frame (shared by the Bullet singles) ushered in the Super Meteor in the autumn of 1955. This incomplete Super Meteor is offered for restoration and sold strictly as viewed. There are no documents with this Lot.

Footnotes

As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding.

Saleroom notices

The Royal Enfield Owners Club kindly advise that the engine number of this machine records it as 1958 Royal Enfield Super Meteor, and that the frame number 0895 is not a recognised Royal Enfield frame number. Accordingly, prospective bidders must satisfy themselves as to the composition, suitability, year and model of the component parts prior to bidding.
