Footnotes

"The most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car." - LJK Setright on the Citroën 2CV.

Ranking alongside the Volkswagen Beetle, Mini, and Land Rover as one of the classic mass-produced cars of the post-war era, Citroën's quirky 2CV debuted in 1949. Intended to provide basic transport in a period of post-war austerity, the 2CV outlived its humble beginnings, going on to attain cult status as the favoured car of the environmentally concerned motorist. Although the original 375cc air-cooled flat-twin engine grew eventually to 602cc, the 2CV's performance remained relatively modest at around 110km/h flat-out, not that that concerned the majority of its devotees for whom the roomy interior, full-length sunroof, and frugal fuel consumption were of far greater importance. It was a sad day for many when the last French-built 2CV left the Levallois factory in 1988, although production continued in Portugal for two more years.

Over the years there had been several 'special edition' 2CV models, one of the best known being the Charleston. Launched in October 1980 as a one-season-only model, the Charleston was so well received that it was incorporated into the regular range almost immediately. A change of carburettor boosted engine output to 29bhp, giving the Charleston a top speed of around 115km/h (71mph) while other improvements included inboard front disc brakes and a new rear-view mirror. A Charleston was the last car off the 2CV production line when Portuguese manufacture ceased in July 1990.

This most attractive 2CV featuring the rarer grey-over-black Charleston colour scheme belongs to the same lifelong Citroën enthusiast offering the Citroën SM I.E., and Citroën CX 2000 in this sale. According to the current owner, the car was comprehensively restored circa 2012 by the previous owner, proprietor of a body repair shop in Italy. Although there are no records of the work, the vendor describes them as follows: the engine has been overhauled; the chassis and body comprehensively restored; and a new interior and new fabric roof fitted.

According to him, the 2CV has covered only some 7,000 kilometres since the restoration's completion. On a recent photo shoot the car performed very well. Offered with Italian registration documents, this charming 2CV Charleston is sure to bring a big smile to the fortunate new owner's face.
