THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

Actor Tom Hanks commissioned this special FJ40 to be competent both in the wilderness and on the highway. Professionally built to high standards, it benefits from an upgrade to a 2000 model year GM L35 4.3-litre Vortec V-6 engine with sequential port fuel injection rated to 180 horsepower from the factory. That was backed up by a GM-sourced 5-speed manual transmission. The driveline features all the highly regarded Toyota FJ functionality with four-wheel drive, Warn front hubs, power brakes and power steering. The stock-height suspension has been beefed up with Old Man Emu shocks and steering damper and it rides on chrome wheels with Toyo Open Country 31 x 10.50 R 15LT tires (including the matching spare).

The interior sports a set of power operated Porsche high back seats (the original seats are included). There are center-facing folding seats in the carpeted rear compartment. It has a roof rack and rear-mounted spare. Entertainment comes from a Sony AM-FM-cassette stereo with extra speakers in the rear. Because it's California where even the backcountry and mountains get hot, there is air conditioning to complement the factory heater.

An indication of how carefully and thoroughly the Vortec V-6 conversion was done is that it has been inspected by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair and bears the BAR inspection label under the hood attesting to its required California smog equipment. The exterior is Rustic Green with a white painted roof. The Porsche seats are black while the original front seats and rear folding seats are Toyota grey leatherette. Professionally built and maintained, Tom Hanks' FJ40 is a strong, usable, and good looking truck. Someone who has driven both a stock 2F-engined FJ and this one characterizes it as "completely transformed with the Vortec engine's power and the GM 5-speed."

The interior is lightly used. The paint is sound and presentable. The engine compartment presents well but is ageing and the chassis ... well, the chassis has back country miles on it. In other words, this is a FJ enthusiast's FJ, ready to continue to give loyal, reliable service both around town and off road. Its Tom Hanks history only adds to its appeal.

Saleroom notices

Since going to press we have been approached by the builder of this car with some key technical information concerning the special construction of the vehicle.

We are grateful to Jonathan Ward of TLC 4x4 Inc. for the following insightful information.

"The engine was brand new, from GM, as was the transmission (new from Toyota), transfer case was rebuilt.

"This FJ is a 2/1980". The transmission is a rare factory H55F Toyota five speed, and the transfer case is also a matched updated split-case 19-spline transfer case with tail-mounted parking brake drum. This vehicle was restored to our highest level, Stage Three. All the way down to raw chassis and axle housings, then all up with all systems fully restored, in detail. The steering was upgraded with Toyota FJ60 style box, eliminating one linkage bar and adding precision. The body was media blasted to bare metal, then fully painted 360 degrees. After paint, prior to final assembly, the underside of the body (and inside floor surfaces) were coated in heat-cured polyurea. The wheels are factory correct for 8/80 and newer, chromed".
