THE CADILLAC DE VILLE
Re-styled and re-engineered for 1961, the Cadillac range was notable for the reduction in size of most models and the continuation of the trend (begun the previous year) towards less extreme tailfins. Changes for the immediate future would be limited to annual facelifts until the fin-less 1965 range arrived with a new perimeter chassis that enabled the engine to be located further forward, thus decreasing transmission tunnel intrusion and increasing interior space. All models were powered by Cadillac's 429 cubic inch 340bhp V8. In keeping with Cadillac's position as America's premier luxury marque, automatic transmission, power-assisted steering, power brakes, windscreen washer and dual-speed wipers, remote-controlled external mirror, heater, defroster and front and rear seatbelts were all standard equipment, while the list of desirable options included cruise control, power-operated windows (standard on the mid-range De Ville series), power-operated seats, central locking, air conditioning and tinted glass.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This red over white leather De Ville Convertible was the car you bought when you had made it to management office. 223.5 inches long, nothing said you had arrived like having the back of your car turn up a good deal later than the front of it. Nicely outfitted with AM/FM radio, power windows, seats, steering, brakes, top, and just about everything else, it was the ultimate topless cruiser for you and five of your closest buddies.
Acquired by the current owner from an Arizona collector in 2013, the car has been meticulously maintained since being purchased. Dozens of pages of receipts adding up to over $50,000 in service, cosmetic refurbishment, restoration, and more speak to the level of detail taken to ensure this Cadillac cruises smoothly and looks good doing it. Among the reams of service paperwork, it should be noted that the front drums have been replaced with discs to improve stopping power. The original touch bar, signal seeker radio is also not currently functioning but remains in place rather than being swapped for a less attractive replacement.
Complete with its thick stack of receipts on file, it is accompanied by an original 'Cadillac 1964' brochure and owner's manual. Turn the radio knob until you find some Rolling Stones or Beatles, channel your inner Don Draper, and head to the local steak house in this fine automobile.
