Mention sporting Italian Twins from the 1970s and SS Ducatis spring to mind. There are those, however, who swear by a different brand. Laverda's 750 series of inclined parallel-Twins maintain a small but dedicated following. Obviously influenced by Honda's 305cc overhead-cam Super Hawk motor, the enlarged design proved its mettle in 1968 when Laverda entered four prototypes – two 650s and two 750s – in the prestigious Giro d'Italia, held on public roads. The results? Victory in the 650cc class, with all four bikes impressively placing in the top 10 overall. The SF was ready for production.

Americans first got to know the bikes in 1968-69, when they were rebadged and brought in as American Eagles. When that short-lived operation failed, the bikes reverted to their familiar tricolor Laverda roundels on the gas tank. The Laverda family got its start making farm tractors so it reasons that their motorcycles were stoutly built. SF engines featured five main bearings (four crankcase bearings and a needle-roller outrigger), a doubled-up cam chain and a starter motor that could probably spin a V-8. No unreliable Italian electrics for the Laverda either; rather a combination of German Bosch and Japanese Nippon Denso.

The bike offered here is a great SF2 example, preciously kept by its late owner among his other two and four-wheeled toys. Since the bike has been static for some time, it currently does not start and will need necessary mechanical checks to get it safely back on the road.
