For the R1, Yamaha redesigned the 5 valves per cylinder Genesis engine used in predecessors from the FZ750 to the YZF1000R. By rearranging the gearbox layout, the engine was made more compact, thus aiding modifications to the frame geometry. They used a modification of the Deltabox frame, and upside-down forks. Early examples were fitted with carburettors, before later versions were equipped with fuel injection.
An early example, such as 'T251 OBV', could be considered the purest form of the model, and one can only imagine that clean, original, low mileage, examples such as this, will only increase in value in the years to come. This R1 was purchased new by the late owner, and was used on a regular, but limited, basis. To attend occasional track days, he purchased a spare set of wheels, shod with track tyres, and these are included with the bike, along with a track fairing, petrol tank and seat unit. Showing a believed-correct 7923 miles on the odometer at consignment, it was last started towards the end of 2019, although it has been kept on a battery tender, and should only need light recommissioning before use with a new owner. Documentation comprises a current V5C, original purchase invoice, service booklet, quantity of expired MoTs, assorted invoices and miscellaneous papers.
