*High-quality restoration
*Very rare edition one of only 6 made and now four left
*Unusual colour scheme
*Increasingly collectable model
If the 1980s saw the hot hatchback explosion (and their spin-off Coupe derivatives) by the 1990s almost all the coupes on the market had gone soft, putting comfort and status above handling and response. One notable exception was Volkswagen's Corrado model, which inherited the gusto of its Scirocco predecessor but with – debatably – even more driver involvement. This was especially so with the VR6 model, a car that punched way above its list price, even though that was hardly cheap and often hailed as "one of the best front wheel drive car money can buy" and "A perfect example of how to setup a FWD car. Often considered one of the best chassis' ever". MPH is delighted to offer this wonderfully restored range-topping and extremely rare VR6 Campaign example.
The VW Corrado Campaign is a rare beast and only 6 were ever made, with just 4 surviving today. Based on the first of the VR6 models launched in 1992. The special edition Corrado Campaign model was built as a prize as part of a dealer incentive to sell the most Karmann produced vehicles, the Campaign model was unique with paint, wheels and trim being reserved for the 6 cars which were given to the top 6 dealerships in the UK to incentivise sales.
This particular car was awarded to the Dovercourt dealership in St. John's Wood and still features its original tax disc in the window.
The restoration work took two years to complete and involved sourcing many hard-to-find – and now unobtainable new old stock components – from the UK, mainland Europe and even from the USA, our vendor says. As a result of that restoration, this VR6 is in what can only be described as concours condition, bills from Volkswagen specialist JMR testifying how much work was involved. Needless the bodywork is in factory-fresh order, showing first-class panel fit, while the engine bay demonstrates truly in-depth dedication to getting things right. The dark metallic purple paint is subtly eye-catching while the glass and external trim are equally good. The alloy wheels were freshened-up too and add a finishing touch to the external appearance.
The interior, in a terracotta colour, is remarkably good and the seats are lightly mellowed: dashboard, door cards and carpet stick to that theme. The running gear has also received much attention, with parts stripped, cleaned and powder-coated and many parts replaced with now-unobtainable new old stock items. The engine has been completely rebuilt around many new parts and is being run in, our vendor says. In all, this is a unique opportunity for the discerning modern classic enthusiast, and would make a great addition to any collection.
