Updating a classic car's character for modern driving conditions while retaining that car's character is no easy task, but when it is done right – and done well – the result is a car that rewards its owner every time the ignition key is turned. MPH's '02 is a first-class example of the 'restomod', a classic that has been restored but has had some tweaks and twists applied at the some time. Beginning with a UK-market BMW '02 (the more popular round light model) , work centred around a soda-blasted body shell which has been fitted with deep chin spoiler and steel flared wheel arches other modern styling cues include de-chromed black shadow trim and the removal of bulky bumpers. A set of 1970s 15-inch cross-spoke alloy wheels, riding on adjustable coil-over suspension finish off the iconic look with a sporting stance.
Our vendor says there is a complete photographic record of work carried out. Under the bonnet sits a fully detailed M44 (from a 318is) twin-cam engine to which a stainless steel twin-pipe exhaust system is fitted. But the mechanical improvements don't stop there, as all-round discs handle the stopping duties, a five-speed gearbox gets the power out through a revised differential and power steering makes light of any journey. With a bespoke interior (think custom-embroidered leather M-sport seats and alcantara headlining) continuing the theme and serious attention to detail on even the most out-of-sight areas, this '02 for the 2000s is surely the ultimate (restomod) driving machine?
