Footnotes

"Driver...... get into fourth gear quickly..... he's starting to change his mind!"

The Austrian artist and illustrator Berthold Richter (born 1881 - ) created these six amusing watercolours in 1923. Amidst the recognisable background scenery of Vienna, he depicts various adventures with a humorous automotive theme, all involving ladies and their lovers, admirers or even predators! The watercolours are finely detailed and extremely accomplished in their execution. The automobiles, for example, are all recognisable German and Austrian marques, and include Steyr, Wanderer, Mercedes and Audi. Little is known of Richter, although he is known for several 1920s poster designs. It is believed that this 'Auto Spass' series may have been illustrated in the leading German automobile magazine, MOTOR. Originally purchased from a private museum of 20th Century illustrations in Vienna in 1980, the six 'Auto Spass' illustrations resided in a private American collection up until 2002, when they were acquired by a London gallery.
