Footnotes

An early example, this Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Coupé was ordered in Germany in 1970 by a businessman, who had to emigrate to New York, USA to further his professional career. Without registering his new car in Germany, he had it shipped directly to New York where it was registered on 15th September 1970. Built in European specification, the car entered the USA equipped with a km/h speedometer; a manual gearbox rather than the more usual automatic; and with the numberplate lights integral with the rear bumper instead of at both sides. The only modification was the addition of small sidelights - orange in front and red at the rear. The car was delivered with the following desirable options: dark blue leather interior, 'Ivory' steering wheel and gearlever knob, power steering, power windows front and rear, air conditioning, fog lights (two front, one rear) and alloy wheels.

The Mercedes passed from father to son and stayed in their family until 2005 when it was sold to another New York private collector. In October 2007 (at 46,263km) the car was sold for a third time and returned to Europe. At 46,705km, the braking system was overhauled with new ATE callipers and DoT 5 silicone fluid, while only a few kilometres later Carrosserie Faes of Boechout carried out a complete Dinitrol anti-corrosion treatment. At 47,146km, Autobedrijf De Jonghe of Deurne carried out a complete Bosch Service check of the ignition and electrical systems: fitting a new battery, new alternator, new spark plugs, and new ignition leads. At 49,359km, the car underwent homologation at Mercedes-Benz St. Pieters-Leeuw, with new Belgian PVG. The most recent service included work to the ignition and brakes; changing oils and filters; fitting new Michelin XWX tyres; replacing the starter motor; and fitting four new Mercedes-Benz shock absorbers. Always properly serviced, the car now displays a total of 84,692km on the odometer. The car comes with its original tool kit (complete), a spare Fuchs wheel, and a substantial file.
