Footnotes

Porsche's first successful competition cars were lightweight developments of its first road car, the 356, one of which took class honours at Le Mans in 1951. The firm's first purpose-built sports-racer arrived two years later in the form of the 500 Spyder, which had been inspired by the 356-based, mid-engined prototype built and campaigned successfully by Porsche's Frankfurt distributor, Walter Glöckler. In 1954 the 550 Spyder gained the Ernst Führmann-designed Type 547 quad-cam racing engine, which was carried over to the successor Type 550A (spaceframe) model and then the replacement 718 RSK Spyder. Introduced in 1958, the 718 RSK featured an improved development of the 550A's spaceframe chassis and completely redesigned front suspension. Lower and more aerodynamic than its predecessor, the 718 RSK was updated with double wishbone rear suspension for 1959 before evolving into the closely related RS60 and RS61. In an illustrious career, these Porsche Spyders took countless class victories in international sports car racing and won the European Hill Climb Championship and the 1963 Targa Florio outright.

As is the case with rare and exotic racing sports cars, ownership of genuine Porsche Spyders has always been restricted to a handful of the wealthiest enthusiasts, a situation that - inevitably - has resulted in demand being satisfied by the replica-building industry. The early example offered here is the work of Devin Enterprises of El Monte, California, USA, a company that produced glassfibre kit-car bodies, as well as complete vehicles, from 1955 to 1964. Introduced in 1958, the Devin D featured a new body style and was built on a ladder-type chassis. The front suspension of transverse torsion bars and trailing links was from Volkswagen, while single coil-over dampers and trailing arms were used at the rear. Customers could choose either Volkswagen or Porsche engines, the car offered here being powered by an overhauled Porsche 356A unit, which has been enlarged to 1,800cc and produces 100bhp. Other noteworthy features include Porsche 356B brakes, Porsche Speedster seats, covered headlamps, and an external fuel filler. Devin D production is estimated as 46 cars.

The current vendor purchased this Devin D Spyder in the USA in 2008. At that time the car had very early Porsche brakes, as found in cars from the Gmünd and early Stuttgart production, and a VW Beetle engine from the 1970s. The Spyder was in poor condition when purchased and the current owner decided to have it restored by recognised experts, the body being entrusted to an aircraft specialist. Described by the vendor as in good condition throughout, the car is offered with Austrian registration papers and an old FIVA Identity Card.
