Footnotes

Mercedes-Benz revived one of its most famous model designations of all time when it introduced the new 300 SL in 1985. However, on this occasion the newcomer was not a thinly disguised sports racer but the latest in a noble line of six-cylinder luxury Gran Turismos stretching back to the 230 SL of 1963. The 300 SL came with a single-overhead-camshaft engine that produced 188bhp; this was a mere three horsepower more than the old twin-cam '280' unit, the main gains over the superseded smaller motor being a useful increase in torque and a marked reduction in fuel consumption. Top speed remained the same at around 210km/h.

This automatic transmission 300 SL Convertible was sold new in Germany and exported to Belgium in the 1990s. The Belgian owner kept the Mercedes until 2017. The car is said to be in very good mechanical condition having been fitted with a new-old-stock 'crate' engine (the Datakarte has been updated so the car is still 'matching numbers'). In addition, the gearbox was totally rebuilt and new suspension installed. The car is said to be running nicely and very enjoyable to drive. Accompanying documentation consists of a history file and Belgian registration documents.

Mercedes-Benz 300 SL cabriolet 1987
